Clean grease, less wastage, faster maintenance

Fluid-Bag for heavy-duty lubricants in the mining industry

Fluid Bag Flexi and Multi flexible IBC

Fluid-Bag is a flexible IBC grease container of 1000 or 900 l (265 / 240 gal.) for heavy-duty bulk greases, oils, coolants and other liquid and semi-solid products.

Fluid-Bag replaces standard grease drums, grease bins and similar containers, ensuring cleaner and easier handling of heavy-duty grease and lubricants, for example for mining equipment maintenance. Fewer and faster grease container changeovers save time in the maintenance process and diminish lubricant contamination risks.

Fluid-Bag FLEXI (left) is a single-trip solution with a wooden pallet, transport bag and inner container.

Fluid-Bag MULTI (right) consists of a reusable steel pallet and transport bag, and a single-use inner container. Also available as a rental solution on request.

Less Grease Wastage

Fluid-Bag's flexible grease containers can be stretched and squeezed and therefore emptied much more efficiently. Using our discharging equipment such as Tau Xtractor or a Discharge Roller, you will only be left with 1-2 % residue in the bag, instead of 4-5 % as in the case with grease drums. This actually means that you will have 4 to 10 times less grease waste in a Fluid-Bag than in 200 litre drums.

This easy example sums it up pretty well (tests performed with NLGI 3 grease):

• residue using Fluid-Bag: 5-10 kg/1000 l
• residue using 200 litre drums: 20-50 kg/1000 l

Always Clean Grease

closed systemThe Fluid-Bag container for grease stays sealed during filling, handling and discharge. Since the Fluid-Bag is flexible, there is no need to let air inside during discharge, the inner container simply collapses inside as the grease is leaving the bag, as the example image to the right shows. For this reason, there is no risk of exposure to particles or moisture when handling bulk grease. With a 1000 liter container instead of a 200 l drum you will need fewer changeovers, which also diminishes contamination risks and messy drum changes.

Fluid-Bag containers are a key ingredient in an preventive maintenance strategy - a clean heavy-duty lubricant ensures a well-functioning vehicle fleet as well as lower downtime and malfunctions costs.

Easier handling

1 Fluid-Bag equals 4-5 drums, which means you will:

  • simplify your grease handling and transports
  • reduce storage space
  • reduce working time and lower your labor costs for bulk grease handling.

In addition to this, you avoid all cleaning costs thanks to the single-use inner container, and either abolish or drastically reduce return transport costs.

Just as safe as a rigid container

Being flexible, Fluid-Bag containers absorbs shocks very well and are resistant to rough handling, since the fabric is very tear resistant. Here you can see a drop test with a FLEXI falling from 66 cm height, and an accident simulation with a fork lift hitting the MULTI container. Engen Petroleum uses Fluid-Bag containers for lubricants, greases and transformer oils that are shipped to mining sites in South Africa, Moçambique, Angola, DRC and Ghana. With Fluid-Bag, Engen Petroleum is able to offer a mini-bulk solution to manage challenges experienced with long distance transportation, on-site inventory management, contamination control and disposal. Expensive return transport of empty containers can also be avoided. Read more here.

Packaging and lubricant cleanliness FAQs

  • Why is lubricant and grease cleanliness so important?
    • Dirt and moisture in lubricants create wear & tear on machinery and equipment, so the ability to control cleanliness has big implications for the lubricant blender and the customer.

    • With the ability to provide packaging that has not been exposed to an industrial environment particle counts regarding lube quality (ASTM D-4407) can be controlled at the point of manufacture. As noted by the work of NORIA and others, an improvement in two or more ISO cleanliness levels can extend bearing, servo, and pump life by 2 to 3 times. With proper monitoring expensive filtration systems and associated holding tanks and reservoirs may possibly be eliminated.

    • Clean grease as made by the manufacturer can be delivered directly to the bearing or lube point. With the closed package the Fluid-Bag can be placed in the worst of industrial environments, like mines and steel mills, and still deliver uncontaminated product.

  • Why is Fluid-Bag the best packaging choice for keeping lubricants clean?
    • Fluid-Bag is a closed system, there is no need to open the container at any stage during discharge. You simply connect the adaptor/pump/hose and start discharging, the bag will collapse on itself as the product is emptied by the pump.

    • The bag is flexible, so it moves, shrinks, and expands with pressure and temperature changes. The Fluid-Bag can be filled without letting any air inside. This means that no breathing will occur, and for this reason temperature and pressure alterations are not a problem.

    • The Fluid-Bag is manufactured in clean room production area, where the level of air particles is controlled in accordance with ISO 14644-1 standard, class 8. The Fluid-Bag is made from food grade materials since we also supply packaging for the food and pharma industries. This means that the Fluid-Bag container is much cleaner than competing grease packaging, and no particles or contamination is added by the packaging when filling the grease or oil.

    • For products that are degraded by air, an aluminum liner can be provided to prevent air or moisture migration.

    • The inner container is always new and clean, no risk of contamination from topped up drums or from poorly cleaned rigid containers.

  • How does packaging affect lubricant cleanliness?
    • When using a rigid container, you must open the lid to be able to discharge and pump out the content. This means that you expose the lubricant to the surrounding air, which in many cases contains dust and particles that will immediately lower the cleanliness level of the grease or oil.

    • In the case of rigid grease drums and IBCs, temperature changes can cause “breathing”. This means that liquid, moisture, and particles are sucked into the drum, contaminating the grease or oil inside.

    • Grease drums, totes and bins may contain particles and contamination already before use, which degrades the quality of the oil or grease filled inside.

    • If drums and bins are being topped up with additional lubricant product, contaminants might increase with time in your lubricant.
